UK REGISTRATIONS

UK Registrations fall into two main categories (excluding Channel Islands and Isle of Man). These are Great Britain (GB) registrations and Northern Ireland (NI) registrations. Registrations from these categories are interchangeable between the licensing authorities.

Northern Ireland Registrations
Northern Ireland registrations are 'dateless' registrations, which is their particular attraction in many cases. As DVLNI (Dept of Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland) do not operate a registration system that is date specific, NI registrations are issued in number order as required. This means that GB vehicles can be registered through DVLA Swansea with a NI registration number, and effectively become 'dateless' to the onlooker. The vehicle V5 will of course still state the actual age of the vehicle.

GB Registrations
GB (mainland UK) registrations are date specific, which means that GB registrations can only be put onto vehicles that are newer than the particular registration i.e. - you CANNOT make your car look younger than it is by changing the registration. This also applies to GB registrations being put on to cars registered in NI. Please contact us to check on specific dates of registrations.

Stipulations that MUST be met are as follows for GB vehicles:
  • V5 must be in the name of the current owner (can be changed during a registration transfer with appropriate paperwork if necessary)
  • If car is of an age and type that requires MoT or PSV, it must possess a CURRENT certificate at the time of transfer
  • The vehicle must have a CURRENT Road Fund Licence (Tax disc) or about to receive one - this can be purchased during a registration transfer as part of the transfer process again with the appropriate paperwork. At local office discretion, if the tax has expired naturally (not cashed-in) within the last 6 months the transfer may be allowed to proceed.
For NI registrations the rules are slightly different - please contact us to check on your particular situation before purchasing any numbers. In all cases the above documentation is sent to us with payment prior to the transfer taking place. This is normal practice within the industry and is the only process by which numbers can be transferred quickly and safely with minimal risk to all parties.
